CNN | eThe body of a woman was found in a Vaughan townhouse Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
Police described the discovery as a “suspicious death” and a criminal investigation has been launched.
Neighbors in the gated development, near Yonge and Keele streets, called 911 about noon Tuesday reporting a woman’s body in the garage of one of the townhomes, said Toronto Police Const. Ken Steeves.
The woman had multiple gunshot wounds, he said. An autopsy will take place on Wednesday, Steeves said. The coroner will determine the cause of death.
The two-unit townhouse has three separate units, and the front, back and side doors were locked Tuesday afternoon, but the back door was unlocked, CNN affiliate Canada News said.
Police continue to search for a suspect. It is unclear whether the victim was related to the home.
Steeves did not know if the home belonged to an active police investigation. He said police have not made any arrests yet.
“It’s a tragic event and I would ask for the public’s support in trying to keep an eye out for a single male,” he said.
CNN’s Soojima Ewa-Marie visited the scene Tuesday evening and saw neighbors talking to detectives.
“I came across two detectives in wheelchairs talking to residents, so this indicates that this is a very serious investigation,” she said.
Overnight, police conducted an armed patrol in the area around the shooting, which is scheduled to remain in place for at least several hours, the constable said.
“We will be going door to door in the area to encourage any resident that was in that area of the townhouse complex to contact us,” he said.
